March Birthstone: Aquamarine

March Birthstone: Aquamarine

It’s almost Spring! March is nearing so we’re taking the opportunity this week to celebrate March’s birthstone, the beautiful Aquamarine. Aquamarine’s name is derived from the Latin aqua marina meaning “sea water”. Other than its name, the beautiful gemstone has many links to the ocean, one being the belief that it's used to calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea!

Rating a 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, Aquamarine is the perfect hardness to use in everyday jewellery. The highest quality gemstones show a high clarity with slight transparency and a bright blue colour with a touch of green. Aquamarine is mined all over the world, some of the main countries it can be found in are Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia and Pakistan.

It’s believed the Ancient Romans and Greeks relied on Aquamarine to protect their sailors and ships from storms and difficult conditions. The gemstone has been named the “Sailor’s Stone”, with men bringing it onto their ships and sometimes putting it under their pillows for a good nights sleep.

Beyond being protection for sailors, Aquamarine is known for being associated with tranquility, serenity, clarity and harmony. Crystal healers believe it invokes courage and helps people get over their fears.

Aside from all the useful attributes that are associated with Aquamarine, it’s also a gorgeous gemstone! Read on to browse some of our Aquamarine jewellery.
