Those born in February are lucky enough to have Amethyst as their birthstone! Click to learn about the meaning, uses and beliefs behind the beautiful gemstone, Amethyst.
Happy Birthday to our February babies! If you’re lucky enough to be born this month, you claim beautiful Amethyst as your birthstone. Amethyst is a variety of Quartz and is sacred in many cultures and religions. Rating a 7 on the Mohs scale, Amethyst is perfect for everyday jewellery as it is fairly durable- we love using it at Augustine Jewels!
The name Amethyst is derived from the Greek word ametusthos meaning ‘not intoxicated’. However, the use and meaning differed through cultures, we’ll be taking you through a few of the extensive list in this weeks piece.
Ancient Greeks believed Amethyst prevented drunkenness and overindulgence for centuries, hence why they wore Amethyst to events where alcohol was present and had it set in their drinking chalices. However, the Feng Shui meaning is focused on wealth enhancement and Ancient China used it as a tool to clear negative energy- showing the variety in beliefs that different cultures held. As we move to slightly more modern times, the Renaissance found it being used with animals to convey the meaning of protection and security, this was carried forward to soldiers in war using the gemstone to protect themselves in conflict.
Amethyst is also thought to have healing properties and is still used today. Linking back to the beliefs of the Ancient Greeks, it is used to enhanced sobriety and also for insomnia relief. The general theme with the perceived uses of Amethyst is activating general spiritual awareness to relax and be more in touch with yourself.
As much as Amethyst is believed to be useful and has many interesting connotations, it’s also an incredibly beautiful gemstone! At Augustine Jewels, it has been used in several of our collections. Have a browse of a stunning selection of our jewellery using Amethyst:
