The Diamond is the most valuable gemstone of all time, April babies are lucky to have it as their birthstone! The name Diamond comes from the Greek word 'adamas' meaning unbreakable, unchangeable or indestructible. This is fitting for the gemstone as it is the hardest stone known, rating a 10 on the Mohs scale and can only be scratched by other diamonds. In fact, Diamonds are 58 times harder than anything else in nature.
The quality of a diamond is determined by a globally accepted standard for describing diamonds, known as the four Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat. The colour ranges from D to Z, with D being the whitest diamond you can get - perfect for those that want a stunning sparkly white diamond! They form under very high pressure and temperature conditions that only exist around 100 miles below the Earth’s surface.
Diamonds are associated with strength, love and health but also have been the symbol for eternal love and commitment - making them the perfect stone for engagement rings! The first ever recorded diamond engagement ring was made for Mary of Burgundy in 1477, although they only came into fashion in the 1950s. Ancient Greeks would also wear diamonds when they went to battle as a symbol of strength and fortitude.
